South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham was a leading member of the Republican establishment and a Trump ally in the Senate.

But everyone awoke to bad news.

And Lindsey Graham’s sudden death just hit Washington like a ton of bricks.

Lindsey Graham passed away from a cardiac arrest in the early hours of the morning at the age of 71.

Tributes immediately poured in from Graham’s fellow members of the GOP establishment.

“My heart is heavy this morning to learn of the passing of my friend and colleague, Senator Lindsey Graham,” Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) wrote on X.

“Lindsey’s long and dedicated service in the Air Force and in Congress carried him to far-flung regions of the world. He was a strong advocate for the United States and a strong ally to freedom-loving countries across the globe. He believed in the might of America to achieve good in the world and dedicated his life to advancing that cause,” Thune added.

“As South Carolina’s senior senator, Lindsey fought passionately for the Palmetto State. He was a trusted adviser and colleague to me and many others, and numerous presidents and heads of state have relied on his counsel. His influence on the federal judiciary, our national defense, and his beloved South Carolina will be felt for generations,” Thune continued.

The news of his sudden passing is shocking and deeply saddening for my family and me. Like many relationships in life, mine with Lindsey was complex in later years. I choose to remember the endless laughter and joy he brought to my family so many times, in so many ways. These memories are some of the most precious of my life. I hope that he is at peace and I hope he is in heaven drinking a white Russian and fishing with my Dad and Joe [Lieberman],” Meghan McCain wrote on X.

Graham’s death leaves a vacancy in the Senate that South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster must now fill.

McMaster’s pick then runs in a special election with a primary runoff on August 3 to serve as the interim Senator who will then run in a special election on a date set by the governor for the full term.
