Trump Plants His Flag With AI

Republicans are slamming the brakes on AI data center construction.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed an executive order pausing all new data center construction and ordered an audit of more than 300 projects to determine if they would drive up power bills.

Michigan Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers came out in favor of a moratorium on data center construction.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed legislation that bars power companies from passing on the costs of data centers’ increased water and power usage onto customers in the form of higher prices.

But President Trump hit back, declaring that communities would end up “backward and poor” if they opposed data center construction.

“The only reason that communities throughout the U.S.A. should not want Data Centers is if they want to end up being backwards and poor. If they want to be successful and rich, with far lower taxes and jobs all over the place, let Data Reign. The good news is that there are plenty of other places that want them. If we kill the Golden Goose, you will only have yourselves to blame. China could not be happier with this anti Data Center movement. Actually, they can’t believe it is happening!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

The Political Reality of Data Centers

AI data centers are politically toxic.

CEOs claim AI could eliminate 90 percent of white-collar jobs and replace parental interactions with children.

Americans also worry that data centers are driving up water and electric bills and lowering quality of life by generating noise through their power consumption.

Even normal allies oppose Trump’s zeal for data centers, with Tennessee Congressman Tim Burchett telling reporters in response to Trump’s comments that he must be “backward and poor” because he opposes data center construction, saying AI CEOs alienated the public with their predictions about the effects of this technology on humanity.

“I guess I’m backwards and poor… They’ve done a poor job of educating the public on those things. They’re just: ‘We’re for ’em, and you should be for ’em’ kind of thing… We need more local control. We should have brought everybody to the table,’ Burchett stated.

CNN data analyst Harry Enten told viewers that opposition to data centers cuts across party lines, citing a Fox News poll showing 76% of Democrats and 60% of Republicans oppose building data centers in their areas.

“There is no debate when it comes to where people stand on AI and data centers, and simply put: it’s electoral poison at this point,” Enten stated.

“You see across the board a clear position: a vast majority of Americans and voters are against building AI data centers,” Enten added. “When it comes to the politics of it, it is very clear: people are against it.”
