Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez rarely hides what she wants.
Now the Squad’s biggest star has thrown her weight behind one Michigan Senate hopeful.
And the word she picked to describe her plans for Republicans should make every Trump voter sit up straight.
A Manhattan pep rally for Michigan’s Democrat nominee
US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) grabbed the microphone at a New York City fundraiser on October 5 for Abdul El-Sayed, the Democrat Party’s nominee for Michigan’s open US Senate seat. RealClearPolitics posted video of the speech the following day.
Near the end, she let the crowd in on a little secret. “I don’t do these kinds of things very often,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
But El-Sayed gets special treatment. He has been her guy for a long time.
Back in 2018, Ocasio-Cortez barnstormed Michigan for El-Sayed when he ran for governor. The Washington Free Beacon reported at the time that he lost that Democrat primary to Gretchen Whitmer by roughly 20 points.
This time the story ended differently. El-Sayed edged out US Representative Haley Stevens (D-MI) in the August 4 primary by about one percentage point, according to the Associated Press as cited by Ground News. He now faces former US Representative Mike Rogers (R-MI) in November for the seat retiring Michigan Senator Gary Peters is giving up.
The primary turned into a money brawl. The United Democracy Project, a super PAC tied to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, spent about $30 million backing Stevens or hitting El-Sayed, according to AdImpact data reported by WLNS. Total outside spending on Stevens’ behalf topped $50 million. Siasat put all outside spending in the race near $70 million, the most for any Democrat Senate primary in American history.
Ocasio-Cortez had her own number. She told donors El-Sayed managed to “overcome $80 million in super PAC slandering in a primary election.”
That figure runs well ahead of what the trackers counted. Maybe a Manhattan fundraiser crowd just wasn’t in the mood to audit her math.
And she promised the fall would get uglier, warning he will face “possibly hundreds of millions of dollars of the same in the general election.”
Then she pitched the bigger plan. “And we have written a check on the left saying if you champion these policies that have popular support, we can win. And now it is time to cash it,” she said.
“We need to wreck them”
Here’s where the speech took a turn.
“And we need to wreck them. We have to do the business,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “We have to show them what is up.”
RealClearPolitics read “them” as Republicans in its headline. Nothing else in her remarks points anywhere else.
She followed up with a list of what she called consequences. “That there are consequences to violating people’s right to vote. That there are consequences to taking away women’s right to choose,” she said. “That there are consequences for picking on trans kids and lowering our wages and stripping our healthcare.”
That one list tells you most of what you need to know about where the Left wants to take the country.
Start with the “right to vote” line. Democrats have spent years calling voter ID laws and citizenship checks an assault on democracy. Most Americans would call asking a voter to prove citizenship plain common sense. The SAVE Act exists for exactly that reason, so American citizens and only American citizens decide American elections.
“Women’s right to choose” is the Democrat Party’s polished phrase for ending the life of an unborn child. The words got softer over the years. The act itself never changed.
And “picking on trans kids” is how Ocasio-Cortez describes Republican efforts to stop transgender surgeries on minors and keep boys out of girls’ locker rooms. Plenty of parents in red states and blue states alike have demanded those very protections.
The wages line deserves its own moment. Left-wing Democrats love to talk about working-class paychecks. But the same wing of the party has spent years fighting deportations and pushing amnesty, which floods the labor market with illegal aliens who undercut American workers. Nobody can open the floodgates on cheap labor and then act shocked when wages sink.
The map she wants to break
Ocasio-Cortez didn’t keep her ambitions small. “And we are going to break the electoral map everywhere. Everywhere,” she said. “Because that is what it is going to take to guarantee healthcare to every American in the United States.”
There it is. The whole point of breaking the map is government-run healthcare.
El-Sayed ran his primary campaign on “Medicare for All,” according to the Associated Press as cited by Ground News. Under that kind of system, Washington, DC takes over the doctor’s office, the hospital, and the pharmacy counter, and every patient lines up behind a federal bureaucrat.
Folks on Medicare already know the drill. Rules, forms, and fights over what gets covered come with the territory. Now picture that system swallowing every private plan in the country, with no exit door and a price tag big enough to demand massive new taxes on working families.
But the healthcare pitch wasn’t the only tell. She also said a win in Michigan would “break open the entire political calculus in America.” Her logic was simple: “if Abdul can win in Michigan, anybody can win anywhere.”
Translation? Michigan is the test kitchen. If the recipe works there, Democrats will serve the same far-left menu in every swing state from Pennsylvania to Arizona.
She even spelled out the long game herself. “Because this project is not about one race. It’s not about one cycle,” she said.
What comes after Michigan
This isn’t the first time Ocasio-Cortez has tried to drag the Democrat Party further left through somebody else’s campaign. She did it for El-Sayed in 2018 and came up short. The Free Beacon, which called her a self-described democratic socialist at the time, reported that only two of the five candidates she campaigned for that summer won their primaries.
Eight years later, the left wing of the party sounds a lot more confident. Stevens congratulated El-Sayed after the primary and pledged her support for his campaign against Rogers, according to Siasat.
And that should give pause to anybody who still believes the Democrat Party has a moderate wing with real muscle. Ocasio-Cortez called the current political moment a nightmare, then vowed her side would “come out of this nightmare stronger than we’ve ever been before.”
The “nightmare,” presumably, is a country where Donald Trump sits in the White House and Republicans run Congress. Her cure is a party that takes its marching orders from the socialist wing instead of the voters in the middle.
So where does it go next? If the “wreck them” crowd gets its way, the next round of demands will probably look a lot like the last one, only louder. Abolishing ICE. Ending deportations. Packing the Supreme Court. Putting Washington, DC in charge of every American’s medical care.
But for a congresswoman who says she rarely does these events, she sure didn’t hold much back.
