Squad Democrats never needed much of an excuse to go after immigration enforcement.

A pre-dawn federal search at Ilhan Omar’s Washington, DC, home handed them one anyway.

But what her allies rolled out next goes far beyond defending a colleague.

Federal Agents Show Up at Ilhan Omar’s Door

Agents with Homeland Security Investigations, the criminal investigative arm of the Department of Homeland Security, executed a search warrant at the Washington, DC, home of Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (D-MN) in October 2026, with the midterm elections only weeks away.

Fox News Digital reported that the probe centers on immigration paperwork Omar’s late father filled out on behalf of the Somali-born congresswoman when she was a child.

The Justice Department said its agents carried out a search warrant a judge had authorized. And the department kept everything else close to the vest. “This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation,” the department said.

Breitbart News later reported that federal agents seized Omar’s cellphone as part of the same investigation.

No prosecutor has charged Omar with any crime. Her office insists she has “done nothing wrong” and called the search an “outrageous abuse of power and an unprecedented escalation in the weaponization of federal law enforcement to target political enemies.”

None of this came out of nowhere, though.

Border czar Tom Homan said in September that the congresswoman faced an “ongoing criminal investigation.” Vice President JD Vance went further months earlier during an appearance on The Benny Show. “We actually think that Ilhan Omar definitely committed immigration fraud against the United States of America,” Vance said.

House Democrat leaders circled the wagons fast. Congressman Pete Aguilar (D-CA) called the raid “deeply disturbing” and said it “raises serious questions about the continued corrupt weaponization of the federal government against Donald Trump’s adversaries.”

Funny how that works. Plenty of the same Democrats spent the summer of 2022 lecturing the country that nobody stands above the law after the FBI searched Mar-a-Lago. A judge signs a warrant for a Republican, and it’s justice. A judge signs one for a Squad member, and it’s tyranny.

The Bill That Showed Up One Day Later

But the Omar story didn’t stay about Omar for very long.

Congresswoman Delia Ramirez (D-IL) formally introduced the Reimagining Safety Act one day after the search. The bill would dismantle DHS entirely, wipe out ICE and Customs and Border Protection, and hand what’s left to a brand-new “Department of Community Safety.”

TSA and FEMA would survive the cut. Border control, interior immigration enforcement, and the detention of illegal aliens would not.

Ramirez lined up three co-sponsors: Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), Adelita Grijalva (D-AZ), and Jim McGovern (D-MA).

Her statement read like a laundry list of grievances against anyone who enforces the border. It ended this way: “every threat against our elections by [President] Trump, Markwayne [Mullin], and [Stephen] Miller is a reason DHS must be dismantled and something new must take its place.”

Ramirez didn’t point to any order, directive, or written plan to back up that election claim. Federal law already bars troops from polling places. And the administration has never put any scheme to interfere with voting on paper. That line is speculation dressed up as a reason to tear down the agency that guards the southern border.

She kept going. “Instead of the weapon DHS has proven to be, we need a department built on the best parts of who we are and can be, and the best examples of how we can take care of each other in hard times,” Ramirez said.

At a separate press conference, Ramirez stood next to Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) and dropped the pretense altogether. “Today we are saying we want to abolish ICE,” Ramirez said. “We’re saying we want to end the detention that is creating profits for corporations at the expense of our very own family, friends, and neighbors.”

DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin didn’t mince words. “Radical leftists are calling to defund the police and abolish DHS. It’s NEVER going to happen,” Mullin told Fox News Digital.

Speaking at a Breitbart News event, Mullin boiled it down further. “We have the job of protecting the homeland, and it should never be controversial . . . what it really comes down to is they’re anti-law enforcement,” Mullin said.

Democrats Have Wanted This Agency Gone for Years

Here’s the part worth sitting with for a minute.

Ramirez held her abolish-ICE press conference before agents ever showed up at Omar’s door. So the raid didn’t create this bill. It just gave Democrats a sympathetic face to hang it on.

Remember why DHS exists in the first place. Islamic terrorists under Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda murdered nearly 3,000 Americans on September 11, 2001. Congress built the department after the intelligence bureaucracy missed warning after warning about that plot. Ramirez now wants to bulldoze the post-9/11 security structure because it finally enforces the immigration laws already on the books.

And a country with no Border Patrol has no border. Call it whatever sounds nicest at a Chicago press event. Without CBP, ICE, or detention, every illegal alien already here stays put, and every one thinking about coming gets an engraved invitation.

That’s amnesty with extra steps. Nobody has to pass a citizenship bill if nobody’s left to enforce the law. Democrats know exactly who benefits when tens of millions of illegal aliens stay put: employers hunting for cheap labor that undercuts American workers, and a party that has spent years trying to import a new voter base it can count on.

Voters already settled this argument once. Donald Trump ran in 2024 on mass deportations and a sealed border, and he won the White House on that promise. Ramirez’s bill amounts to a formal request to undo the mandate the American people handed him.

But “Abolish ICE” started as a protest slogan in 2018. Democrat leaders swore back then that nobody serious wanted it. Now four sitting members of Congress have put it into legislative text and slapped a feel-good name on top.

The pattern doesn’t stop here, either. First the slogan. Then the bill. Next comes the push to make it a litmus test for anyone hoping to win a Democrat primary. Watch how many Democrats in swing districts dodge questions about the Reimagining Safety Act between now and November.

And keep an eye on the Omar investigation itself. If prosecutors bring charges, Democrats will call it persecution. If they don’t, Democrats will call the raid proof that DHS needs to go.

Either way, the bill was waiting in the drawer the whole time.
