Elon Musk packed up his DOGE office and left Washington, DC behind in 2025.

Democrats never let it go. They kept a running list of grudges the whole time.

And now a pack of would-be House chairs just showed what they plan to do with the gavels.

Democrats Build a Musk Hit List Before the First Ballot Gets Counted

House Democrats already have their investigation plans sketched out, assuming voters hand them control of the chamber in the November midterms. Potential committee chairs and rank-and-file members have spent months talking up who sits at the top of their target list.

One name keeps coming up. Elon Musk.

Democrats see three openings. They want to dig into Musk’s stint running the Department of Government Efficiency, the billions in federal contracts SpaceX and Tesla hold, and the Starlink fight in Ukraine, where critics accuse his company of choking off internet service to the Ukrainian military while President Donald Trump pushes Kyiv toward a peace deal with Russia.

US Representative Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, made no effort to hide the appetite. “There’s a lot of different parts of the corruption around Musk,” Jayapal said in an interview.

Over at the Oversight Committee, the panel with the sharpest investigative teeth in the House, Democrats sound just as eager. Sara Guerrero, a spokesperson for top Oversight Democrat Robert Garcia (D-CA), put it bluntly: “We definitely have a lot of questions about Elon Musk’s role in DOGE and it is something we plan to investigate.”

One Democrat on that panel, speaking without a name attached, went even further. “I think DOGE was the original sin,” the lawmaker said.

And US Representative Sydney Kamlager-Dove (D-CA) needed only four words to sum up her feelings about dragging Musk before Foreign Affairs. “Bring it all on.”

Democrats Still Can’t Forgive Musk for Touching Their Bureaucracy

Strip away the buzzwords and the motive looks pretty simple.

Musk spent roughly five months going through the federal government like a man clearing brush on a back forty. DOGE eliminated an estimated 250,000 federal jobs, helped dismantle USAID, and froze grants that Democrats had treated as permanent fixtures for decades.

US Representative Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), the top Democrat on the Space, Science and Technology Committee, still sounds furious about it. “Elon Musk and his DOGE cronies stirred up chaos, ruined careers, and played a large role in illegal grant cancellations and firings of civil servants,” Lofgren said in a statement.

But “illegal” is Lofgren’s word, not a court’s verdict. And the same party now weeping over fired civil servants cheered on vaccine mandates that cost nurses, soldiers, and police officers their livelihoods during the COVID years.

US Representative Greg Meeks (D-NY), the top Foreign Affairs Democrat, wants what he calls “a full accounting” of DOGE’s work and promised his panel “will not let anyone obstruct our oversight.”

To be fair, DOGE handed its critics some ammunition. US Senators Gary Peters (D-MI) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) asked the Government Accountability Office to review DOGE’s claimed savings, and the watchdog found the group couldn’t document the status of more than half the contracts it listed as terminated. Homeland Security Committee Democrats latched onto a separate GAO report and demanded Musk testify under oath.

Sloppy bookkeeping on a government website deserves a fix. But it hardly explains why a parade of House Democrats wants the richest man on Earth sitting at a witness table with his right hand raised. Washington has never lined up a hearing for every bureaucrat who padded a budget estimate. Well, almost never. The difference here is that the padding came from the guy trying to shrink government instead of grow it.

Musk’s Checkbook Painted a Target on His Back

Then there’s the money. Musk has poured $276 million and counting into Republican committees and candidates this cycle, which makes him the GOP’s single largest known midterm donor.

US Representative Greg Casar (D-TX), who chairs the Congressional Progressive Caucus and sits on Oversight, didn’t pretend the donations were beside the point. “And, of course, Elon Musk is on that list because it takes two to tango,” Casar said.

That line tells on itself. Democrats have spent years preaching about money in politics, yet their own billionaire benefactors never seem to land on anybody’s subpoena list.

US Representative Maxine Dexter (D-OR) lumped Musk in with “the well-connected billionaire, trillionaires” she accuses of using federal contracts to pad their bottom lines. “We need to shut that down,” Dexter said.

And Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) keeps his public message on affordability while vowing to go after the “wealthy, the well-off and the well-connected.” That’s what the media likes to call populism on the left. It sounds tough on billionaires, but it rides along with a party agenda that keeps growing the very government Musk tried to trim, and with open-border policies that drive down wages for the working folks Democrats claim to champion.

Ukraine Hands Democrats a Brand New Excuse

The newest front involves Starlink. Ukrainian officials recently accused SpaceX of throttling the satellite service and said the slowdown hampered their drone missions. Zelensky called the restriction “a big mistake.”

Musk flatly denies using Starlink as leverage. “Starlink will never turn off its terminals,” Musk said, later adding, “We would never do such a thing or use it as a bargaining chip.”

Jayapal still frames the whole thing as a scandal. She wants answers about a contractor who does “something that shuts down communication in a war that has been extremely important to the United States to support Ukraine.”

But notice the assumption baked into that complaint. To Jayapal and the Foreign Affairs crowd, the war itself is sacred, and anyone nudging it toward a settlement must be up to no good. Associates of Mykhailo Fedorov, a former Ukrainian defense minister, say Musk keeps telling Kyiv it’s time to cut a deal. That puts Musk squarely in line with President Trump’s America First promise to end the fighting.

The neoconservatives and globalists who have spent more than a decade itching for a showdown with Russia, even at the risk of nuclear war, have never forgiven anyone who stands in the way. A Democrat House would hand them subpoena power to go with the grudge. And American taxpayers, who already shipped billions to Kyiv under Joe Biden with thin oversight, would foot the bill for the hearings too.

A Democrat House Would Send a Warning to Anyone Who Crosses Them

Anyone who remembers 2018 has seen this movie. Democrats swore up and down they had no interest in impeachment, then took the House and impeached President Trump twice, first over Ukraine and later over January 6. Both proceedings worked as partisan exercises aimed at damaging Trump, not sober investigations.

Musk won’t be the only name on the docket either. Plenty of top Democrats want an early run at Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and US Representative Emilia Sykes (D-OH) said she wants answers across the board rather than from any single target.

But Musk carries a special kind of symbolism for the Left. He bought Twitter, released the Twitter Files that exposed Big Tech censorship of conservatives, bankrolled Republicans, and then went to work cutting the federal payroll. Every one of those moves crossed a line Democrats never wanted crossed.

So the message to the next businessman tempted to help a Republican president is pretty clear. Step up and expect to spend years paying lawyers and dodging cameras on Capitol Hill.

Spokespeople for Musk did not respond to requests for comment on the Democrat plans.

Then again, Musk has never needed a spokesperson to fire back. If Democrats get their gavels, he’ll probably answer them on X before the first hearing even gets scheduled.
