And now Democrats groaned after a socialist’s unhinged answer to one scandal.

The Platner Baggage Nobody Wants to Carry

Graham Platner became one of the most embarrassing figures in recent Democrat Party history. The Maine socialist won the Democrat primary for US Senate in Maine, then dropped out in July after several sexual misconduct allegations surfaced, including a rape allegation reported by Politico that he has denied. But the scandals didn’t start there.

Before the sexual misconduct allegations blew the campaign apart, Platner had already spent months trying to explain away a chest tattoo that critics say closely resembles a Nazi Totenkopf symbol. He denied any Nazi sympathies and eventually covered the tattoo over. His old Reddit posts, which included dismissive comments about sexual assault victims, had also circulated widely. And yet he still won the Democrat primary, which says something about the state of that party’s activist base.

Platner continues to deny the sexual misconduct allegations and maintains his innocence. But the damage was done. Several prominent Democrats who had endorsed and praised him were left with egg on their faces when the whole thing collapsed.

The consulting firm that ran his campaign was Fight Agency — the same outfit that managed New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s successful campaign. And that firm is now working for Raman.

The Debate Moment That Made Democrats Wince

Nithya Raman is a Los Angeles City Council member, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America’s Los Angeles chapter, and the challenger to incumbent Mayor Karen Bass in the upcoming general election. She finished second to Bass in the June primary with 29% of the vote to Bass’ 34%, sending the two into a runoff.

At a recent mayoral debate, a moderator put the Fight Agency question directly to her.

“[It was] reported that you’ve hired the same political consulting firm that managed Graham Platner’s campaign in Maine, who had to resign amidst sexual assault allegations. Is that true? And is that the best choice? And why did you make that decision?” the moderator asked.

Raman’s answer did not go well.

“Well, I did hire an advertising agency to make my paid ads, who also worked with Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s successful campaign,” she said.

The crowd of several hundred people broke into loud moans as some hissed. Raman had led with the Mamdani connection as if that were the good news — and the room let her know what they thought of the pivot.

The moderator followed up, asking whether she had weighed the pros and cons of being associated with Platner’s campaign. Raman stumbled through the response.

“Absolutely. But we wanted to make sure that we were hiring good people to make our ads. We have to get talent to be able to run our team. We we we we weighed the issues,” she said.

The stammer was audible. The crowd’s reaction made it worse.

Raman then tried to redirect the heat toward Bass, pointing to communications advisors in the mayor’s inner circle who she alleged were doing crisis PR consulting for a company called Lineage at the same time a fire was burning in Boyle Heights. “That, to me, is a real, real, real problem,” Raman said.

But the damage was already done. The moderator turned to Bass and asked, “That wasn’t a good look, was it?” Bass didn’t need to say much.

What the DSA Keeps Getting Wrong

The DSA’s own platform openly calls for government seizure of major corporations, the abolition of the Senate, and the creation of a classless society — textbook Marxist objectives that would dismantle the constitutional republic and the private property rights that make broad prosperity possible. Raman’s membership in the DSA’s Los Angeles chapter isn’t a footnote. It’s the lens through which her candidacy should be understood.

And the Platner connection is a window into something specific about how the socialist left operates. Platner’s campaign attracted enthusiastic support from DSA circles even as his Nazi tattoo and inflammatory Reddit posts were already public. The movement’s activists were willing to overlook a lot in the name of ideological solidarity. That’s not a coincidence — it’s a pattern.

Fight Agency kept promoting Platner even after details about his conduct emerged, according to reporting from Townhall, and allegedly pressured a former worker who raised concerns about his behavior. That’s the firm Raman chose to run her paid advertising.

The fact that she led her defense with “Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s successful campaign” tells you something about the political world these candidates inhabit. Mamdani is the socialist who won the New York City Democrat mayoral primary and whose platform includes ideas that would make any serious fiscal conservative’s head spin. Dropping his name as a character reference in a room full of Los Angeles Democrats was apparently supposed to help. It didn’t.

Los Angeles is a city that has been run by the left for decades. The results are visible to anyone who has walked through its streets — rampant homelessness, skyrocketing costs, a city government that has struggled to deliver basic services even before the catastrophic wildfires. Raman is running as the alternative to Bass, but both candidates come from the same ideological universe that produced those results.

Bass finished ahead of Raman in the primary. The runoff is in November. And Raman’s campaign is now carrying the Platner association into the general election, whether she wants to or not.

The groans from her own crowd at that debate were not a minor moment. Democrats in that room understood immediately what the Fight Agency connection looks like to voters outside the activist base. And Raman’s stammering, looping, deflecting non-answer confirmed that she had no good response ready — because there probably isn’t one.

But there’s a broader point here that goes beyond one stumbling debate answer. The socialist left keeps nominating candidates who carry enormous amounts of baggage — ideological, personal, and political — and then acts surprised when those candidates become liabilities. Platner was a disaster waiting to happen, and the DSA world backed him anyway. Now that same world’s LA candidate is paying a price for it at her own debate, in front of her own supporters.

That’s what happens when a movement prioritizes ideological purity over basic political judgment. The chickens come home to roost, and they do it on live television, in front of several hundred people who are groaning loud enough for the cameras to pick up.
