Vice President JD Vance sensed a growing problem.

And JD Vance delivered one warning that should scare the hell out of every Republican.

The $20 Burrito Debate

Charlie Kirk show producer Andrew Klovet kicked off a massive debate on the right by sharing a story on social media about a Turning Point USA student saying the impact of inflation and affordability were hurting young people by citing an example of how a burrito now costs $20 and is turning into a luxury item for college-age Americans.

The Daily Wire’s Matt Walsh responded that the cost of living was crushing Americans and that Republicans should “end the stupid foreign wars” and focus 100% of their attention on affordability or risk further socialist victories in the November election.

“Grocery prices are insane. They’re still rising. Addressing this problem should be the number one priority of every elected leader. End the stupid foreign wars and focus on this issue. It’s one of the main reasons socialists are gaining power,” Walsh posted on X.

That led to a number of neoconservatives calling him, and other young people worried about the increasing costs of the standard of living in America as whiners who should be happy settling for less and just go eat ramen noodles.

“I hear that young people are upset about $20 burritos. Okay, young people: a burrito does not cost $20. If you’re paying $20 for a burrito and you’re not independently wealthy, you’re doing life wrong. We have enough problems as a country without insane expectations that the government is going to provide us gourmet-quality burritos,” Ben Shapiro wrote on X.

Former Texas Congressman Dan Crenshaw posted that young people needed to “Stop whining, get a job, eat Ramen like the rest of us did in college, on a budget with 4 roommates. The market doesn’t care what you think something “should” cost. Only communists care (they set prices, remember? Then everyone starves, remember?) Are you a communist? Or are you an American adult male capable of handling his own shit?”

“Cry me a river. The burritos in the college cafeteria are included in your meal plan,” Washington Post columnist Marc Theissen wrote on social media.

In reality, the neoconservatives seized on the burrito price as a proxy to try and browbeat Americans into supporting the endless regime change war with Iran that they desire.

JD Vance Responds

Vance responded to neoconservatives like Shapiro, dismissing affordability concerns of young people in an interview on Fox News with host Will Cain.

Young people, Vance explained, were looking at a world where they played by the rules, went to college, and worked hard, and the ability to buy a house in a good neighborhood and live an upwardly mobile lifestyle as their parents did, was increasingly out of reach in America thanks to the inflation Joe Biden imposed on America.

 “I think the real question — and I think it’s a question for you, it’s a question for Republicans at large — when a young person looks at their life, and they say, you know, ‘I did what America asked me to do. I went to college. I got a job, and I don’t think I can afford the life that my parents could afford.’ Now, whether or not that’s statistically accurate, it is a real feeling, and a growing feeling. So, what is your answer to that young person?” Vance stated.

Vance warned Republicans that adopting this dismissive attitude would just push more people towards socialism.

“Our response to that can’t be just to ignore the economic concerns that I think are feeding this rising interest in socialism.”

Vance Lays Out How Republicans Can Win the Affordability Debate

Vance went on to explain that Republicans need to pivot to the detailing to Americans how Trump’s America First agenda of tariffs to bring good jobs back to America and secure borders to eliminate cheap foreign labor will create good jobs with rising wages,

“While these things sometimes take a little bit of time, we are already seeing the positive results come from [President Donald Trump’s] economic policies. We’re seeing trillions of dollars of new investment into this country, which means good middle-class jobs for young people, middle-income people, all across our country. We’re seeing housing prices finally stabilize — they doubled during [former President Joe Biden’s] administration. They have finally, kind of, flatlined during the first year and a half of the Trump administration,” Vance added.

Vance said Republicans needed to stop lecturing young Americans about how they are, in the words of Ben Shapiro, “doing life wrong” and instead realize it was the GOP’s fault if they fumble the affordability issue.

“We also wanna get interest rates down, of course, so that young people can afford a home. We want people to be able to afford the good things about this wonderful country that we all live in, and my warning to my fellow Republicans, Will, would be if we don’t get this right, don’t blame young people for being sympathetic to socialism. We’ve gotta blame ourselves,” Vance continued.

Neoconservatives like Shapiro hate Trump and his agenda and want to return the Republican Party to the messaging and policies of the Mitt Romney/John McCain days.

Vance cautioned that following the path would lead both the GOP and America to disaster.

 “You don’t stop socialism by throwing slogans at people about the free market. As much as I love the free market, you stop socialism by making people’s lives better,” Vance concluded.
