The 2026 midterm elections are right around the corner.

And an old worry is creeping up on Republicans.

And now one letter just revealed Trump’s worst election nightmare.

RINO Congressman Mike Lawler, who sponsored multiple amnesty bills, is now teaming with Democrats to demand that the Trump administration censor the internet to crack down on so-called “election misinformation.”

In a letter co-authored with Democrat Congressman Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey, the pair insisted that the Department of Justice (DOJ), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and the Federal Election Commission (FEC) suppress speech online that they deem to be AI election misinformation.

“With the midterm elections just a few months away, we urge your agencies to coordinate to ensure the U.S. is prepared for AI-driven threats to election integrity, including the development and deployment of appropriate monitoring and mitigation capabilities,” the letter read. “We also urge you to deepen engagement with major AI companies to understand their safeguard protocols, testing practices, and mechanisms for identifying political bias, misinformation, or model vulnerabilities that could affect voters.”  

So-called “election misinformation” is the excuse Big Tech deployed to censor the Hunter Biden laptop story and President Trump’s warning to the American people about voter fraud ahead of the 2020 election.

The Biden administration also weaponized CISA to censor critics of the COVID vaccine, mask mandates and lockdowns based on the supposed need to clamp down on the spread of so-called “misinformation” on social media.

First Amendment experts warned that Lawler and Gottheimer were wading into dangerous territory by infringing on Americans’ right to free speech during an election.

“Misinformation is generally protected under the First Amendment,” fellow for free expression and technology at the Cato Institute David Inserra told the Daily Caller. “It can be misleading speech, it can be inaccurate speech, false speech, it can be speech that is biased or unverified. The First Amendment protects that speech. All of us, every American, every single day, says things that are biased or favor one view over another that leaves out, in crucial details. We’re all inaccurate; we all say things that turn out to be wrong or partially wrong. But we don’t empower the government to somehow police that speech, and that is exactly what this letter to various government agencies is suggesting.” 

“It’s saying to these government agencies, you should look long and hard about trying to police misinformation and biased speech around elections and that is a frightening attack on the First Amendment and just generally a frightening attack on the notion that people should be able to decide for themselves what they want to do with their vote and how they want to think about elections,” Inserra added.

President Trump and the GOP won elections in 2016 and 2024 when tech companies allowed free speech on social media.

Democrats won in 2020 when they pressured social media platforms to censor any speech that didn’t conform to the left’s narratives on COVID, Black Lives Matter and election integrity.

Lawler’s demand for internet censorship threatens to hand Democrats their secret election weapon.
