Americans figured the comedy police got run out of town in 2024.

Comedians quit apologizing. Audiences quit caring who got offended.

Then one late-night punchline set off a meltdown at a network that supposedly turned the page.

Shane Gillis Went to the Gym and Came Home a Villain

Shane Gillis hosted Saturday Night Live for the third time, and he spent most of his monologue roasting the guy holding the microphone. His weight. His hairline. His sisters.

Then he wandered over to the gym.

“I haven’t been to the gym in so long I didn’t know women just dress like ****** now,” Gillis told the crowd.

He wasn’t finished. “And don’t look, you are not allowed to look. For real, don’t look because they are filming. I’m in the background of, like, ten TikToks right now.”

Anybody who has set foot in a fitness center lately knows what he’s talking about. Phones sit propped on water bottles, tripods block the squat rack, and some poor fella just trying to finish his bench press ends up as an unpaid extra in a stranger’s workout video. Half the gyms in America feel more like film sets than weight rooms.

That was the joke. A guy who admits he hasn’t lifted in ages walks back in and finds the whole place has changed on him.

But Hollywood didn’t hear a joke. It heard a confession.

Dan Levy, the Schitt’s Creek star, posted a video on Instagram scolding Gillis. “Women wearing short shorts at the gym does not make them ******, it makes the men calling them ****** misogynists,” Levy said. Former SNL cast member Ego Nwodim and singer Maren Morris jumped on the pile too.

And none of those three needed a gym membership to find the outrage. They found it on their phones.

CBS Mornings Put a Comedian on Trial

Celebrity griping usually burns out in a day or two. CBS Mornings made sure this one got a second wind.

Co-host Nate Burleson teased the segment like a true-crime special. “The question is: Is he being targeted unfairly by cancel culture, or does he deserve all of this criticism he’s getting?” Burleson asked.

Saturday co-host Adriana Diaz handled the report, and she didn’t work very hard to hide her answer. After CBS replayed the TikTok line, Diaz cracked, “Now, he’s in the background of even more.”

And then came the rap sheet. Diaz reminded viewers that SNL fired Gillis in 2019, days after hiring him, over old remarks on his podcast. She gave his Guinness World Record for the biggest comedy crowd ever a quick mention before the segment drifted right back to the grievances.

CBS then turned to Sophie Carpenter, a fitness coach and content creator. “Well, the point of a joke is to be funny. I didn’t find anything funny about it,” Carpenter said.

Fair enough. Nobody has to laugh. But when a national morning show treats one person’s unamused reaction as a news event, the segment says a whole lot more about the network than about the comedian.

Co-host Vladimir Duthiers wrapped things up with a shrug. “It’s a complicated subject,” Duthiers said.

But it really isn’t. A comedian told a joke. Some people laughed and some people groaned, which is pretty much how live comedy has worked since vaudeville.

And the setting makes it worse. Bari Weiss took over as editor-in-chief of CBS News, and liberal media types fretted that she would yank the network away from its woke habits. If that memo went out, the morning crew must have left it in the break room.

Democrats Swore Woke 1 Was Over

Here’s what Democrats still can’t seem to process. Comedy switched teams.

During the 2024 campaign, President Trump sat down for long, rambling conversations with Joe Rogan and Theo Von, two hosts whose audiences skew young, male, and fed up with being lectured. Rogan endorsed Trump on the eve of Election Day. Gillis, whom the Daily Beast recently tagged a “MAGA-friendly host,” turned his SNL firing into one of the biggest careers in stand-up.

Those comedians didn’t drift away from the left over capital gains rates. They drifted because the left turned every punchline into a hearing.

But Democrats claim they got the message. In August 2026, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) went on ABC’s This Week and borrowed a line from a New York City councilman.

“And I have a local city councilman who has this saying, ‘Woke 1 was crazy,’” Ocasio-Cortez said.

She also waved off the pandemic years. “I think that, you know, during lockdown, of course, rhetoric in that time is not rhetoric we would use today,” she said.

Read that one twice. She didn’t say the ideas were wrong. She said the rhetoric wouldn’t play today. That’s a branding note, the kind of thing a consultant scribbles on a napkin before the next campaign.

And if Woke 1 was crazy, Woke 2 deserves a hard look. Woke 1 came with riots, defund-the-police chants, and lockdowns that people who never missed a paycheck forced on everybody else. Woke 2 looks quieter and smoother. It wears a blazer, reads from a teleprompter, and calls a gym joke “a complicated subject” before asking the audience whether the comedian deserves what he’s getting.

Maybe that’s reading too much into one morning show segment. One CBS package doesn’t make a movement.

But the pieces line up awfully neatly. The same crowd that wants credit for moving past Woke 1 never let go of the instinct underneath it, the belief that somebody somewhere needs to approve a joke before Americans get to hear it. Give that instinct real power again and it won’t stop at morning television. It’ll show up in hate speech proposals, platform “safety” rules, and HR trainings at every company in the country.

And Gillis’ team didn’t give CBS a comment. He doesn’t owe anybody one.

Nearly 74,000 people bought tickets to watch him in a single night. CBS Mornings couldn’t pack a stadium like that if it handed out free coffee mugs at the door.
