The Russia hoax just got a lot uglier.

Newly declassified records are pulling back the curtain on how the FBI targeted one of President Trump’s own cabinet members.

And what investigative reporter Paul Sperry found buried inside those files about the FBI’s Jeff Sessions probe is something the permanent Washington establishment never wanted Americans to see.

A Criminal Probe Built on a Newspaper Article

Investigative reporter Paul Sperry reported that newly declassified FBI records confirm the bureau opened a criminal probe into then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions during the Russia investigation.

The probe carried the codename MARCH TOLL.

The FBI opened the case on May 10, 2017 — one day after President Donald Trump fired then-Director James Comey.

That timing alone tells a story. The man running the country’s top law enforcement agency gets fired, and within 24 hours, his subordinates open a criminal investigation into the sitting Attorney General of the United States.

But the predicate — the actual evidence used to justify cracking open a file on a sitting cabinet member — is where this gets truly outrageous.

Sperry wrote on X that the file confirms a 2019 story by RealClearInvestigations reporting that former Deputy Director Andrew McCabe had targeted Trump’s first attorney general.

“Just-declassified FBI document confirms 2019 story by RCI that McCabe also opened an investigation targeting Trump’s first AG, Jeff Sessions, over #RussiagateHoax, and actually used a leftwing Huffington Post article as foundation to justify the probe,” Sperry posted.

Read that again. A Huffington Post article. That was the foundation. Not a credible intelligence tip. Not a wiretap. Not a sworn affidavit from a named source. A piece from a left-wing news outlet was folded into the case file and used to help justify a criminal investigation into the Attorney General of the United States.

The White House Government Transparency Task Force released the records.

Two Democrat Senators Pulled the Trigger

The investigation was also predicated on a March 20, 2017, letter to Comey from two Democrat senators on the Judiciary Committee — Patrick Leahy of Vermont and Al Franken of Minnesota.

Both senators demanded an investigation into Sessions over his Russian contacts and whether he had been truthful in his Senate testimony.

Sessions had already updated his disputed testimony before the FBI even opened MARCH TOLL. The bureau knew this and opened the probe anyway.

Al Franken, it’s worth noting, resigned from the Senate in disgrace before the FBI concluded its investigation of Sessions. The man who helped light the fuse on a criminal probe against a sitting Attorney General left office under a cloud of his own misconduct allegations — yet the investigation he helped set in motion kept grinding forward for another year.

The probe lasted from May 2017 to May 8, 2018 — nearly one year to the day after it opened.

Mueller’s office declined to charge Sessions. The FBI formally closed MARCH TOLL with nothing to show for it.

Sessions had already recused himself from the Russia investigation into Trump before any of this happened. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein then appointed Robert Mueller as special counsel to investigate the alleged Russia collusion.

The sequence matters. Sessions steps aside. The FBI opens a criminal file on him anyway. McCabe, according to Sperry’s reporting and the now-declassified records, was the driving force behind it.

McCabe, the Uranium One Stall, and a Pattern Worth Noticing

This wasn’t an isolated act of institutional overreach. Other declassified records have exposed the bureau’s reliance on unverified material in this same era. Separate memos named McCabe among officials who stalled a Clinton Foundation probe into the Uranium One deal.

So the same man who allegedly sat on a Clinton Foundation investigation also opened a criminal probe into Trump’s attorney general using a left-wing news article as supporting evidence. That’s not a coincidence. That’s a pattern.

The FBI classified MARCH TOLL as a “sensitive investigative matter,” according to reporting on the declassified documents, and put it under “prohibited status” under the authority of Assistant FBI Director E.W. “Bill” Priestap — a key figure in launching the broader Russia probe into Trump.

This is the same institutional machinery that the permanent Washington establishment has insisted for years was operating in good faith. The same apparatus whose defenders in the media and the Democrat Party attacked anyone who suggested the Russia investigation was being used as a political weapon against the Trump administration.

The declassified records now confirm what the skeptics said all along.

And it connects to something much bigger than Jeff Sessions. When the FBI opens a criminal probe on the sitting Attorney General of the United States — within 24 hours of his boss firing the FBI director — using a letter from partisan Democrat senators and a Huffington Post article as its predicate, the question isn’t whether something went wrong. The question is how deep it went and who else was in the loop.

Mark Felt, the FBI’s associate director during the Nixon era, was later revealed to be Deep Throat — the anonymous source who fed information to the Washington Post to settle a personal score after being passed over for the FBI directorship. The media treated him as a hero. History should treat him as a cautionary tale about what career bureaucrats do when they decide a president must go. MARCH TOLL fits neatly into that same tradition.

The permanent political class in Washington — the career officials, the intelligence community loyalists, the Democrat operatives in the Senate — moved in concert to neutralize Trump’s first attorney general. They used a left-wing newspaper article to do it. They got caught. And the only reason the American public knows any of this is because President Trump ordered it declassified and the White House Government Transparency Task Force put it in front of the country.

The Russia hoax didn’t just target Trump. It targeted everyone around him. And the people who ran that operation never faced meaningful accountability for it.

That’s the real story buried inside MARCH TOLL.
