President Trump went to the mat for a Republican senator who was being set up to fail.

Democrats cooked up one of the most brazen ballot tricks in recent memory.

And Trump unloaded on the whole rotten scheme with words that every voter needs to hear before November.

The Two Dan Sullivans and the Mess Democrats Made

The Alaska Senate race has taken a turn that would be funny if the stakes weren’t so high.

Two-term Republican US Senator Dan S. Sullivan (R-AK) is running for a third term. His leading challenger is Democrat Mary Peltola, the former US Representative who represented Alaska in the House from 2022 to 2025. That alone would make for a competitive race worth watching.

But a third candidate showed up: Dan J. Sullivan, a retired schoolteacher from the island community of Petersburg, who filed to run under the same first and last name as the incumbent senator.

The Alaska Division of Elections initially tried to keep Dan J. Sullivan off the ballot, with Elections Director Carol Beecher finding that the challenger filed “with a purpose to confuse or mislead” voters. A state judge overturned that decision. The Alaska Supreme Court then allowed him to stay in the race. And now, according to NBC News, the FBI, the Alaska attorney general, and the US attorney’s office in Alaska are all investigating whether two or more people conspired to create the Sullivan challenger’s campaign with the intention to confuse voters, hurt the incumbent, and boost votes for Peltola.

Dan J. Sullivan and Peltola have both denied any coordination. But the suspicious details keep piling up. The challenger reportedly changed his party registration to Republican shortly before filing. He initially attempted to register as “Dan S. Sullivan,” using the incumbent’s middle initial. And a Democratic consultant reportedly helped him file his paperwork.

“My intention is not to trick people,” Dan J. Sullivan told the New York Times. “I would hope people are informed enough to know the difference between an incumbent senator and a teacher.”

That’s a creative defense. Whether voters find it convincing is another matter entirely.

The August primary confirmed the threat is real. Mary Peltola finished first with just over 48% of the vote. Senator Dan S. Sullivan came in second at roughly 42.7%. Dan J. Sullivan pulled 2.44%. Democrat David Leslie, who had finished fourth, subsequently withdrew from the race, which elevated Republican Gerald Heikes into the final general election field.

So the November ballot now features Senator Dan S. Sullivan, Dan J. Sullivan, Gerald Heikes, and Mary Peltola — all competing under Alaska’s ranked-choice voting system.

Trump Torched Ranked-Choice Voting in the Oval Office

President Trump did not mince words when Gray Television’s White House Correspondent Jon Decker asked him about the Alaska race during a recent Oval Office session with reporters.

“Just to show you how crooked the Democrats are, first of all, they have ranked choice, which is a crooked form of voting,” Trump said. “It’s totally dishonest, ranked choice. They throw everybody into a hat and somebody backstage that nobody knows picks a winner. It is ridiculous.”

Trump called the two-Sullivan situation a “disgrace.”

“This guy’s a phony,” Trump said of Dan J. Sullivan. “And he was put up by the Democrats, and they don’t admit it, but it’s been so proven. So I will go to Alaska to make sure that a great senator gets reelected. I will be going to Alaska. I’m going to be going the last 30 days before the election.”

On Truth Social, Trump fired off a direct warning to Alaska voters: “ALASKA: Be careful, VOTE FOR THE REAL DAN SULLIVAN TODAY. Through me, he’s brought HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS OF DOLLARS BACK TO YOUR STATE. The Dumocrats know how good he is and have put up an imposter of the same name.”

Trump added: “Vote for the ‘INCUMBENT SENATOR.’ Don’t let these Fraudsters get away with this HOAX. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

And in an earlier Truth Social post, Trump put the accusation plainly: “Because of the trickery in the Voting, the Crooked, Radical Left Dumocrats have put up another man named ‘Dan Sullivan,’ and they did this to take Votes away from our Great Senator of the same name. Democrats are trying to ‘trick’ Alaskans, and treat Alaskan Voters with contempt.”

What This Race Tells You About the Left’s Playbook

Ranked-choice voting has been used by the Left as a tool to muddy election outcomes in states where straightforward head-to-head contests would produce clean Republican wins. Alaska voters approved the system in 2020 by a razor-thin margin. A 2024 repeal effort fell short by just 737 votes. A new repeal initiative is now set to appear on the November 3, 2026 ballot, and Trump has thrown his full support behind killing the system for good.

The concern with ranked-choice voting isn’t paranoia. It’s math. When you flood a ballot with same-named candidates, you create the conditions for voter confusion that can split a winning coalition just enough to let a weaker candidate slip through. The Alaska Division of Elections understood this, which is why they tried to remove Dan J. Sullivan in the first place. Federal investigators apparently understand it too, which is why grand jury subpoenas have reportedly been issued.

But the courts let Dan J. Sullivan stay on the ballot anyway. And now Alaska voters head into November staring at two names that look nearly identical.

Senator Dan S. Sullivan has represented Alaska since 2015. He has been a consistent ally of President Trump, supporting military readiness, domestic energy production, and the tax and spending legislation Trump signed into law. Peltola, his main rival, served one term in the House before losing her seat and is now attempting to become the first Democrat to win an Alaska Senate race since 2008.

The stakes couldn’t be clearer. Republicans currently hold a 53-47 Senate majority. If Democrats flip Alaska, they need to win only three more seats in the rest of the country to seize control of the chamber. Losing this seat wouldn’t just cost Alaska a strong conservative voice — it would hand Democrats the tools to pack the Supreme Court, revive amnesty schemes for illegal aliens, and push gun control legislation that would never survive a Republican-controlled Senate. Every one of those outcomes is exactly what the Left is counting on.

Trump recognized the threat early. He’s been sounding the alarm on Truth Social for weeks, warning Alaskans not to be fooled. And his vow to campaign in Alaska personally in the final stretch signals that this race is being treated with the seriousness it deserves.

The question is whether Alaska voters will pay attention. The ranked-choice system is designed to reward confusion. The same-named challenger is designed to create it. And Peltola’s campaign, which denies any coordination, stands to benefit directly if enough voters accidentally check the wrong Sullivan box.

Voter fraud doesn’t always look like stuffed ballot boxes or hacked machines. Sometimes it looks like a retired schoolteacher with a familiar name, a Democratic consultant helping him file his paperwork, and a voting system that turns a simple choice into a puzzle. The millions of Americans who have raised legitimate concerns about how elections are conducted in this country aren’t conspiracy theorists. They’re paying attention. And in Alaska right now, paying attention could be the difference between keeping a strong conservative senator and handing Democrats a Senate seat they have no business winning.

Trump called it a “disgrace.” That’s exactly what it is.
