Pope Leo and President Trump are at odds.
Neither one shows any sign of backing down.
And one top ally said his heart broke over Trump’s feud with the Pope.
Pope Leo publicly spoke out against the war with Iran, declaring that God doesn’t “bless” any wars nor would he answer the prayers of world leaders who start wars.
President Trump fired back that Pope Leo was “weak on foreign policy” and slammed the Pope as liberal.
Trump’s feud with the Pope is causing some concern among Trump’s Catholic base, who support their President, but also respect the Pope as the leader of their Church and a Holy figure.
Montana Congressman Ryan Zinke appeared on CNN and said Trump’s war of words with the Pope hurt him personally.
“Well, you know, I’m Catholic, so it hurts because I can think of a lot of people that might be close to Jesus and I don’t think President Trump is one of them,” Zinke stated.
Zinke urged both the Pope and the President to stay in their lanes and that the Pope should avoid meddling in American politics, and Trump should avoid attacking the Pope, arguing that it was bad for the Church and the country for the President and the Pope to be at each other’s throats.
“But I think his holiness should focus on the Trinity, and the president should focus on national security and issues of policy. But there’s a line there. So I’m hoping it mends because it’s important to mend not only as a Catholic, as a Christian, but as a nation. I think to have a battle between his holiness and the president of the United States, I think it’s unhealthy and, quite frankly, I think it was an errant pitch,” Zinki continued.
Zinke urged President Trump to “walk away” from the battle with Leo and focus on his foreign policy and national security duties.
“I think the president should focus on national security and policy and leave this debate, back and forth, alone and walk away,” Zinki added.
One of the hosts asked Zinke if he was okay with the Pope opposing the war.
“Absolutely,” Zinke replied, and then explained that Catholic Church teaching would lead any Pope to call for peace. “Because, you know, what would Jesus do? Jesus wasn’t a warmonger, obviously. And I think peace and dialogue are what we should all pursue.”
However, Zinke said it would behoove the Pope to stay focused on matters of faith rather than politics, since millions of Catholics view the Pope as a moral guide.
“But again, I think as a leader of the Catholic Church, there are a lot of issues within the Catholic Church. So focus on the Trinity and bringing humanity up,” Zinke concluded, then again, his holiness, you have to believe that it was divine selection and he represents the millions and millions of Catholics that looked for him as the moral guide.”
