Former First Lady Michelle Obama hates President Trump.

But the depth of her loathing of Trump wasn’t known until now.

And Trump made Michelle Obama sob uncontrollably for 30 minutes for one unthinkable reason.

Divorce rumors have swirled around the Obamas for years.

Barack Obama flying solo at Jimmy Carter’s funeral and President Trump’s second inauguration raised eyebrows in Washington and led to the gossip mill churning that their marriage was on the rocks.

Michelle Obama famously hated politics and barely tolerated it when her husband was running for office.

In an interview with the New Yorker, Barack Obama revealed Michelle had even less patience for his constant need to spearhead a campaign to sabotage Trump now that he was out of office.

“She wants to see her husband easing up and spending more time with her, enjoying what remains of our lives,” Obama said, going on to say that Democrats expected him to lead the resistance against Trump even though the norm is that former Presidents refrain from attacking their successor. “It does create a genuine tension in our household, and it frustrates her.” 

Obama added that “the fact that no other ex-president was the main surrogate for the party for four election cycles after they left office.” 

Michelle Obama also revealed that she was “uncontrollably sobbing” for 30 minutes aboard Air Force One on the flight home after leaving the White House following Trump’s first inauguration.

“It was a privilege to serve, but it was hard, and it was hard on our family, it was hard on my daughters growing up in the spotlight,” Michelle continued.

There is no secret that the Obamas hit a rough patch.

In 2025, Obama admitted he was in the doghouse with his wife over his political activities and that he was pulling out all the stops to get back in her good graces.

“I was in a deep deficit with my wife,” Obama told an audience at Hamilton College that April. “I’ve been trying to dig myself out of that hole by doing occasionally fun things.” 

Days later, Michelle Obama addressed the rumors she and Barack were heading for a divorce in an interview on Sophia Bush’s Work in Progress podcast.

“The interesting thing is that, when I say ‘no,’ for the most part people are like, ‘I get it, and I’m OK,’” Obama stated. “That’s the thing that we as women, I think, we struggle with: disappointing people. I mean, so much so that this year people couldn’t even fathom that I was choosing myself, that they had to assume that my husband and I are divorcing.” 

This interview will do little to tamp down the speculation about the Obamas’ marital status because they are both now on the record admitting there was an issue.

It will also end the Democratic Party fantasy that Michelle Obama will ride to the rescue as a Presidential candidate because politics is clearly an activity she loathes, because as much as she despises Donald Trump, she could barely stomach her husband being out on the road to rally the opposition.
